<BR><FONT size=4><U>Resumen:</U> La informalidad es un fenómeno
sumamente<BR>extendido en la mayoría de los países en desarrollo.
En<BR>Latinoamérica el 50 % de los trabajadores asalariados<BR>trabaja en el
sector informal. Tres hechos estilizados<BR>caracterizan la informalidad 1) las
firmas pequeñas<BR>tienden a ser informales y las grandes formales, 2)
los<BR>trabajadores menos capacitados tienden a ser informales<BR>mientras que
los capacitados formales, 3) ceteris paribus,<BR>los segundos trabajadores es
menos probable que sean<BR>formales que los primeros trabajadores. En este
artículo<BR>desarrollamos un modelo que explica estos tres hechos. En<BR>el
modelo firmas y trabajadores heterogéneos tienen<BR>preferencias sobre el sector
en el que operan y eligen<BR>óptimamente el sector en el que operan. Existen
dos<BR>mercados de trabajo, el formal y el informal y tanto<BR>firmas como
trabajadores actúan de manera no restringida.<BR>Contrariamente con esto, en la
literatura anterior, la<BR>decisión de los trabajadores no cumple ningún rol en
la<BR>determinación del equilibrio. Usando el modelo mostramos<BR>que un
incremento en la participación de los<BR>trabajadores secundarios tiende a
aumentar el nivel de<BR>informalidad de la economia. Este efecto explica parte
del<BR>incremento en la informalidad en Latinoamérica de las dos<BR>últimas
